Let’s first talk about Cabana Pool Bar because many people I know do not like this place and I had never been here before yesterday. I have to say my experience here was probably an anomaly only because Tiesto was playing and that had a lot to do with the type of people that attended the venue. Needless to say, many people feel there is a type of “person” you have to portray when attending Cabana Pool Bar. I know this because until yesterday I had the same feeling, hence why I had never been to Cabana Pool Bar in the past. Most specifically, girls feel like they need to put out and wear provocative clothing or they will not be accepted at this venue (not literally, but socially).
The very first steps for me at Cabana Pool Bar were rushing to the washrooms and there I did notice many girls worrying about hair, make-up, clothing, the likes. They even had hired people to fix girls make up and hair in the washrooms. And I’m sure everyone could use a refresher sometimes, but this really puts everyone else in a place where they feel they need to look like a super model to fit in.
While waiting in line, I was approached by a 30-year-old woman who immediately complimented my outfit and exclaimed how proud she was of me for not dressing like a “2 cent w***e”. She continued by telling me how much pressure she felt to dress a certain way to attend the event. She felt uncomfortable and out of place because she was forced to dress according to the “norm” of Cabana Pool Bar. I told her she looked wonderful and not a day older than 20 and that she did not need to dress a certain way to feel a certain way.
The whole conversation really brought me back to the moment I was deciding on what to wear to the event. But I knew myself, and I knew who I was and what I stood for and conforming to the “norm” was something that did not resonate with me. I knew many girls would be dressed provocatively as is the case for this venue but I was not intimidated and nor did I feel that I too needed to dress this way.
I think at the end of the day, as long as you feel comfortable and you feel like yourself, no one should make you feel that you need to look or be a certain way to please others. Sure everyone wants to fit in, but standing out can be just a pleasant experience for yourself.
Speaking of pleasant experiences. Many of you don’t know how excited I truly was to attend this event. Seeing Tiesto live has been on my bucket list since high school and finally having the opportunity to see him literally two feet away from me was a very thrilling experience.
However, I cannot say much about the music that was played, since the Tiesto that I know, is not the Tiesto the rest of the world knows. Unfortunately, even he probably knows he cannot play the real Tiesto tracks to please such a mainstream and present audience. But that’s okay, because anything this man touches turns to gold.
All in all, I had a wonderful first time experience for both Tiesto and Cabana Pool Bar and if there is another similar event in the future I would definitely consider attending.
